Probably the biggest problem of all with football in Uganda is the lack of balls.  There are simply more important things on which to spend what little money people have.  Kids here are so inventive, making balls from banana leaves or more commonly plastic bags but they were so appreciative when we were able to donate footballs to their schools, thanks to the Alive and Kicking charity.

The other thing most young players lack, and for which we received a lot of requests, are football boots.  The children’s feet must have rock-hard soles, because I go running over here and can feel all the bumps on the roads and pitches, every single stone, and I’m wearing specially designed footwear.  On the odd occasion I have been accompanied by kids I know on these runs, and they do it barefooted…
