For our second week in schools, we’ve coached at Standard Academy. It’s a long drive from the lodge and quite remote, but as with Kazuru the children are so sweet and seem to love having mzungus around. There are three teachers from VU there – ‘Sergeant’ Mike Mahoney, Pauline Velge (la Belge) and English Katie (as opposed to American Kaydee).
I was really struck by what an amazing job these volunteers do…they come here with no teaching experience but make an enormous impact on the pupils almost immediately. I stood at the window during one of Pauline’s lessons in only her second week of teaching and everyone (including me) was captivated as she taught us about what should have been the most mundane of topics…thermometers.
